It needs water for protons, food and it needs mitochondria to function.
To get mitochondria to function the best is aerobic exercise.
10 minutes hard or 20-40 minutes moderate aerobic exercise for biogenesis of new mitochondria

The signaling actually starts after your very first workout. The master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, a protein called PGC-1α, ramps up its gene expression within hours of a single aerobic session, peaking around 3–8 hours afterward before settling back toward baseline within a day. So the process kicks off immediately — but that first pulse is just the signal, not new mitochondria yet.
The real mechanism is accumulation. Each session adds another transient pulse of that signal, and those pulses stack on top of each other faster than the previous ones fully fade. With consistent daily-ish training, roughly:

~1–2 weeks: measurable increases in mitochondrial enzyme activity and protein content (this is well-documented — repeated sessions produce detectable protein-level changes surprisingly quickly)
~6 weeks: more substantial increases in actual mitochondrial content/density, the range where the classic ~25–40% jumps in oxidative capacity show up
Months onward: continued, slower gains

The important catch is consistency. Mitochondrial proteins have a relatively short half-life — on the order of about a week — so this is a real "use it or lose it" system. The repeated stimulus is exactly what keeps nudging your baseline upward, which is why daily aerobic exercise suits it so well: you're delivering a fresh signal before the last round of adaptation decays. The flip side is that if you stop, the gains start reversing within a few weeks too.

Then there's the one that matters most at the population level: this whole adaptation drives up your VO2 max (your body's maximal capacity to take in and use oxygen), and cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest known predictors of all-cause mortality — comparable to or exceeding traditional risk factors like smoking or hypertension. Mitochondrial capacity is a real part of what sets that ceiling. So "I built more mitochondria" cashes out, statistically, as meaningfully better odds of a longer, healthier life.

Finally, the aging angle: mitochondrial decline is considered one of the core hallmarks of aging, and exercise is among the best-evidenced ways to push back on it. You're not just adding capacity now — you're slowing the rate at which it erodes later.
